Szentendre island and its characteristic town is located south from Visegrad. It is about 30km long. The Serbians, who escaped to the island after the invasion of the Turks, built numerous churches. Szentendre is home to the Serb Orthodox museum, which displays the great treasure of the Hungarian Serb Orthodox Church. Around the center of the town one can admire its beautiful baroque and late-baroque buildings, as well as the picturesque squares and stairs. It is also possible to visit the Open-air Ethnographic Museum, (or Skanzen) to learn more about the culture and architecture of Hungary. Today the island is inhabited mostly by artists who exhibit their works to tourists.
Szentendre is located about 20 km from Budapest.
